'Silly' cyclist caught riding along the hard shoulder of the M55 in Lancashire
A cyclist was caught by police travelling along the hard shoulder of the M55.
Residents across the county flocked outside to exercise over the weekend as the sun shone over the UK.
While daily exercise is one of the only reasons you are allowed to leave your home during the national lockdown, officers had reason to speak to one such person.
Images caught on a patrol car’s dashcam shows a person riding their bike along the M55, which connects Blackpool to Preston, at around 12.45pm on Sunday (February 28).
Officers said that while it was a "lovely day" to exercise, they "didn’t think the hard shoulder...was the best choice for a cycle".
In response to the incident, Deputy Chief Constable Terry Woods said: "Lancashire Police cover well over 150 miles of motorway including M6, M61, M55, M65 and M58.
"Thankfully not many people are silly enough to risk cycling along them."
The Highway Code clearly states that motorways must not be used by pedestrians, holders of provisional motorcycle or car licences, riders of motorbikes under 50cc, cyclists, horse riders and certain slow-moving vehicles and those carrying oversized loads (except by special permission).
Agricultural vehicles are also banned along with powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
Lancashire Police have not revealed what penalty the rogue cyclist faced.
They have been approached for comment.
