Just after 10pm Highways England reported that the southbound carriageway of the M6 at junction 29 was closed and that traffic was being held.

A spokesman said: "Traffic is held due to a multiple vehicle collision. All emergency services are on scene and traffic officers are working to clear the carriageway and reopen the lanes. Please allow extra time for your journey as delays are building."

It is not known if there are any injuries.

Pictures from motorway cameras showed delays beginning to build leading up to the junction.

At around 10.20pm this evening the highways agency reported that all vehicles had been moved to the hard shoulder and the carriageway was reopening.

The motorway was expected to get back to normal by 11pm.
