Theft of quad bikes leaves elderly Lancashire farmers struggling to run their farm

Two quad bikes described as “absolutely essential” to the running of a Lancashire farm have been stolen, leaving an elderly couple facing major difficulties caring for their animals.

Thieves broke into a secure container at a farmyard in Rimington shortly after 2.30am on December 31.

The quad bikes, which officers said were essential for the day-to-day running of the farm, were taken during the burglary.

Police said the victims are an older man and woman who work year-round to maintain their livelihood and rely heavily on the vehicles to manage the farm and feed their animals.

Officers said the couple do not have younger family members to assist them and that the theft will make their work “considerably harder” at a time in their lives when they are most vulnerable.

Sergeant Kev Day said: “We are following lines of enquiry and I want to assure the rural community that we will do everything within our power to catch the thieves.

“We don't ever like to see anyone fall victim to crime, but it sometimes hits home a little harder when you really see the impact on such a lovely couple of older people.”

Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the Rimington area during the early hours of December 31, or who has information that could assist the investigation, is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log number 0241 of December 31.
