"Reopening it as soon as possible is a priority" - Broughton community cafe shuts its doors

The cottage is still available for community use.

A popular community cafe has temporarily closed its doors while ongoing financial and operating difficulties are dealt with.

But after years of success, with volunteers being brought in to help operations, on October 2 a post was released on social media stating: “I am sorry to announce that the cafe will remain closed until we can resolve our financial and operating issues with Broughton Parish Council. Please bear with us in this difficult time.”

Now, it has been announced that the two parties have met to discuss the future operation and long-term sustainability of Toll Bar Cottage, and both parties agreed that the Charity would surrender its operational licence to the Parish Council.

The statement said: “The Parish Council expresses its sincere gratitude to all past and present Trustees for their commitment and hard work. Through both positive and challenging times, they have worked tirelessly to keep the facility available to the community.

“Both parties also wish to thank the staff, volunteers and residents whose support has helped make Toll Bar Cottage a welcoming and valued village asset.

“Sadly, the café will remain closed to allow the Parish Council time to complete the necessary legal arrangements, manage a smooth operational transition and consider options for its future operation. The Council recognises how much the café means to residents and wishes to reassure the community that reopening it as soon as possible is a priority.”

Availability for community use

The statement continued: “Although the café will remain closed, the Toll Bar Cottage will continue to be available for community use during this transition. Anyone wishing to enquire about availability or make a booking should contact the Parish Clerk at [email protected]

“The Parish Council will explore options for a sustainable operating model that meets the needs of the community and makes responsible use of public funds. It is also exploring a number of community initiatives and will invite the Charity to support their development, with the hope that both organisations can continue working together for the benefit of residents.

“We thank the community for its patience and support. Further updates on the café and future plans for Toll Bar Cottage will be shared as these develop.”
