The new £8.2m incarnation of Preston’s ‘Old Tram Bridge’, which links Preston and South Ribble via Avenham Park over the River Ribble, is opening seven years after the previous bridge was closed due to safety concerns.
A grand launch today, which starts around lunchtime, will see a ribbon cut and the lots of pomp and ceremony ahead of a week-long community programme to celebrate.
The cross-river pedestrian connection between Avenham Park and Penwortham was cut off in February 2019 after an inspection found that the previous bridge was at risk of sudden collapse.
Today The Mayor of Preston will open the bridge with a ribbon cutting at 12.30pm, followed by a ceremony on the bridge featuring community groups and live entertainment.
