Crowds gather as Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment honoured with Freedom of the Borough
The Freedom of the Borough title has historical roots going back to medieval times.
The sun was shining in Leyland as The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment paraded through the town centre on Saturday, April 25, as the military unit was granted the Freedom of the Borough.
The Mayor of South Ribble, Councillor Paul Wharton-Hardman BEM, granted the honour, which is often given to individuals, military units or organisations in recognition of exceptional service to the local area, a long-standing contribution to community life, and strong historic links with the borough.
The parade, starting at 11.30am on King Street, marched through Towngate, Lancastergate and West Paddock before arriving at Leyland Civic Centre for the inspection ceremony.
Leader of South Ribble Borough Council, Matthew Tomlinson, speaking after the event, said: “I’m really proud that South Ribble Borough Council has been able to put on this special event today.
“It’s a very rare occasion, as it’s been more than 30 years since we last bestowed the Freedom of the Borough on an army regiment, and I know the regiment was really pleased to take part.
“The weather has been perfect and the people of South Ribble have come out to watch the band.
“It’s been a really special occasion.”
Our photographer Neil Cross was at the event to capture the scenes.
