'˜Brexit' fears spark debate

The Lancashire Evening Post reported that Coun Rankin was among 12 North West Town Hall chiefs to sign the letter, fearing the effect of a “Brexit” could mean “catastrophe for our councils’ ability to deliver the services people rely on”.

The letter was part of the Labour party’s Labour In for Britain campaign, to persuade people to vote to remain in the EU at the referendum.

It was signed by 64 Labour council leaders from across the country who collectively deliver services to more than 12 million people.

On Facebook, Gill Harwood said: “I’m not 100% on what it would mean either way to be honest other than voting to get out would mean we could shut our boarders.

“This country is the smallest and probably near overcrowded?”

John Hooper said: “How can anyone even think of voting in with what is going on in the EU at the moment.

“I’m sure we could manage to run the country both better and more economically if we vote OUT. I voted in in 1975 but will definitely be voting out in June.”

Voters will go to the polls on Thursday, June 23, when they will be asked: “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?”
