And it proved to be true love indeed as the couple, Simon and Carly Bucknell, are still very much in love and now married with two children.

The messages, which read 'I Love You' I Love You To' and 'Carly N Simon 4 Eva' were written by 16-year-old Carly and Simon, who was 20 at the time, when they first met and became boyfriend and girlfriend.

And it would be a quarter of a century before the messages were discovered by chance in her old attic bedroom at the house in Colne where Carly grew up with her family.

Katie-Mae Waddington (22) moved into the home last month with her partner, Connor Waddington and two-year-old daughter Aria. And it was while repair work on the roof was being carried out and the walls stripped when Katie-Mae spotted the messages.

"I just thought they were so cute and when I saw the names it made me wonder who they were and if they were still together," said Katie-Mae.

After posting a photograph of the messages on social media the post went crazy and Carly and Simon were quickly found.

Still living in Colne, the couple tied the knot in 2009 and have an 18-year-old daughter, Maisie and son Harvey who is 14. Carly is now 41 and a support worker and 45-year-old Simon, an ex student at Colne's Fisher More High School works for Lancashire County Council.

Carly, who went to the former Primet High School in Colne, had to admit that neither her or Simon could remember writing the messages!

She said: "I started to receive lots of messages from people I know asking if the post was about us.

"Neither of us can remember writing the messages but when I saw them I knew straight away it was us and it brought back so many great memories of when we met.

"We got married 13 years after being together and we are still just as happy. Simon makes me laugh every single day."

And Carly later discovered that Katie-Mae is the sister of her nephew's partner!

She added: "It was such a coincidence that has linked the famillies, we couldn't believe it."

The couple are now preparing to have a photograph of their love messages framed to take pride of their place in their home.
