Landmark mural under way to celebrate Eric Morecambe’s 100th birthday
A mural is being created to mark the centenary of one of the town’s most beloved figures, Eric Morecambe.
Set to be unveiled this May as part of the town’s wider “Eric Morecambe 100” celebrations, the mural is under way on the side of the former Hitchens building on the prom.
It will feature Eric alongside his legendary comedy partner, Ernie Wise, inspired by a classic archive image from a vintage Radio Times listing.
The project brings together a strong local creative team.

Artists Molly Bland and Shane Johnstone are currently completing the piece, based on an original concept by fellow local artist Jamie Jenkinson.
Their collaboration reflects the depth of artistic talent within the area and the shared pride in Morecambe’s cultural heritage.
The mural has also been made possible thanks to the support of Brewers Decorator Centres in Morecambe, who have generously donated the paint and materials required to bring the artwork to life.
In a fitting tribute, Eric’s family members, Gail Morecambe and Gary Morecambe, will officially unveil the mural during the birthday celebrations in May.
David Waddington, chair of Morecambe BID, said: “This mural is a brilliant way to celebrate Eric’s 100th birthday and create something lasting for the town.
"Eric Morecambe remains an iconic figure not just locally, but nationally, and it feels right that we mark this milestone with a legacy project that residents and visitors can enjoy for years to come.
“It’s also a fantastic example of what can be achieved when local artists, businesses and the community come together to celebrate Morecambe’s heritage.”
