Man, 72, rushed to hospital after falling on Chorley quarry while clearing paths

A 72-year-old man who injured his shoulder and ribs after "taking a tumble" while clearing paths in Denham Quarry was helped by a mountain rescue team.

Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team (BPMRT) were called to the scene by ambulance crews at around 11.25am today (January 6).

The man, who reportedly injured his shoulder and ribs during the fall, was carried to safety by 22 team members who used their "specialist skills and equipment".

He was then taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

Photos from the scene show the patient being carried on a stretcher through the snow, with the rescue taking approximately one hour and 45 minutes due to the icy conditions.

A spokesman for BPMRT said: "Late this morning, we were requested by the North West Ambulance Service to assist with a 72-year-old male who had fallen and taken a tumble whilst he was clearing and cleaning paths/tracks in Denham Quarry.

"He injured his shoulder and ribs during the fall and the ambulance service requested our specialist skills and equipment to evacuate him to safety and to the ambulance where he was then transferred into Preston Royal Hospital.

"We wish him a speedy recovery, for what is our fifth incident of 2021."
