Have your say on changes and recommendations for these historic areas of Penwortham and Bamber Bridge

You have until November 20 to share your opinion.

Residents of South Ribble are being asked for their views on the borough’s conservation areas.

South Ribble Borough Council (SRBC) has eight conservation areas - places with special architectural or historic interest, which have stricter planning rules to preserve their unique character, heritage, and appearance.

Four Conservation Area Appraisals have recently been updated, and the public can comment on the plans until Friday, November 20.

They concern Rawsthorne Road in Penwortham, the St Mary’s area of Penwortham, Greenbank Road, Penwortham, and Church Road in Bamber Bridge,

Changes and suggestions for improvements are noted in the appraisals. They include:

Rawsthorne Road, Penwortham - It is recommended that the Rawstorne Road Conservation Area boundary be redrawn to remove the eastern part of land that now falls within the Tesco supermarket site, but retaining the small corner of greenspace to the north, adjacent to the crossroads junction, as significant views to the Conservation Area are maintained from this position. Additional changes are proposed to Mornington Road to tidy up the eastern boundary, and to remove 18 Wembley Close as it “provides no contribution towards the historic or architectural importance of the Conservation Area”.

Greenbank Road, Penwortham: The new appraisal states that there are opportunities to enhance the character of the Conservation Area including:

- Reinstating some traditional features such as sash windowes and glazed fanlights

- Removing high fences

-Reinstating front boundary walls that have been removed

- Replacing UPVC windows with wooden windows

-Resurfacing the road.

Church Road, Bamber Bridge: Opportunities to enhance the character of the Conservation Area include:

- Removing ‘inappropriate’ street furniture, such as lighting columns, road signage and pavement surface materials and replacing them with those characteristic of the mid-19th century.

- Road signs should be replaced with more appropriately designed signs that are more in keeping with the character of the Conservation Area.

- Installation of an interpretation board, sign or plaque, showing the location and extent of Church Road Conservation Area, together with a map showing all the Listed Buildings and those of historic importance.

St Mary’s, Penwortham - Opportunities to enhance the character of the Conservation Area include:

- Replacing the pavements and resurfacing the roads to address the current “patchwork” appearance

- Rationalisation and reduction, and/or improved design, of inappropriate street furniture, including lighting columns and dog waste bins.
