Full steam ahead as fair enjoys success

There were death-defying stunts and plenty of vintage engines as thousands turned out to the annual Scorton Steam Fair.

Stunt biker group Broke FMX were this year’s main arena attraction at Woodacre Lodge Farm, as they perform hair-raising aerial stunts in front of stunned crowds.

Families were entertained by the usual favourites including a display of steam engines and exhibition of more than 700 vintage vehicles, the lawnmower grand prix, a fun fair, quad bikes and bungee trampolines, a craft marquee, food hall and beer tent.

Lancaster-based indie folk band The Woodsmen were the headline performers on Saturday night.

Families also camped in the fields, ensuring they didn’t miss out on the fun.

Throughout the weekend, Scorton Steam supported the district branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, its chosen charity for 2016.

Co-organiser Craig Whittingham, 24, said: “We always have a great variety of exhibitions every year. These engines are a part of our history and it is great to see them all in one place.

“We enjoy organising the arena attractions. The motorbike team were amazing, as they performed death-defying stunts.

“It is a great event to organise - and to attend.”

His dad, Paul, 58, added: “This has been a popular show in the area for many years. We have a lot of exhibitors involved.

“They enjoying coming here for the weekend to show their impressive vehicles.

“It is hard work, but we enjoy it and it is a great way to raise money for charity.

“We get fantastic feedback and everyone looks forward to coming back next year. We can’t ask for more than that.

“And we were lucky with the weather, as we had torrential rain leading up to it, but we had sun on the Saturday and two thirds of Sunday.

“We had a great turn out, as always with similar numbers to what we usually have.”
