An “extremely violent” thug left two people with “serious injuries” after attacking them with a hammer in Blackburn.

David Cairney attacked a man with a hammer inside a flat in Stonyhurst Road at around midday on March 30.

When a woman went to help the victim, Cairney attacked her with the same hammer.

The 36-year-old then left with the male victim’s wallet and bank card.

Both of the victims suffered a number of serious injuries which required hospital treatment.

Cairney was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm later that day.

He was later charged with two counts of Section 18 wounding and robbery.

Cairney, of no fixed address, was today found guilty on all counts by a jury at Preston Crown Court.

He was remanded into custody to be sentenced at the same court on December 4.

Det Sgt Sian Hindle, of East Safeguarding, said: “David Cairney is an extremely violent man who carried out a sickening attack on two vulnerable victims.

“I want to place on record my thanks to all the officers who helped secure these convictions and the jury for their considered verdicts.

“This kind of violent behaviour will not be tolerated by Lancashire Police and we will do everything in our power to put the perpetrators before the courts.”
