A traffic cone was placed beside the item so crews could find it more easily, after the finder believed it might be a kneecap.

Furness Coastguard and Cumbria Police were sent to Earnse Bay on Walney on Friday, September 11 after a member of the public reported what was thought to be a human body part washed ashore.

The concern quickly proved unfounded. Furness Coastguard quickly established that the object was not a human body part and was instead believed to be marine life, most likely a sea potato or sea pork.

A spokesman for Furness Coastguard said: “Crews established that it wasn't a human body part at all and was instead believed to be marine life — most likely a sea potato or sea pork.

“The team agreed that the item was not a knee cap as originally reported and the police agreed.

“We would like to thank the member of the public for raising their concerns and placing a marker next to the item.

"We would recommend using What3Words when reporting coastal incidents, as it can help emergency services pinpoint an exact location.

“If in danger on the coast or one of the four navigable lakes, Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater or Derwent Water, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
