The British Geological Survey confirmed a 2.2 magnitude earthquake - at a depth of 3km - struck Silverdale around 9.35pm on Saturday June 5.

The organisation said people had reported the tremor as an ‘isolated noise like thunder’

It was felt in Silverdale, Carnforth, Arnside, Milnthorpe, Burton-in-Kendal, Grange-over-Sands and surrounding villages.

Reports described from residents included "we both heard a loud bang" and "I thought the neighbour had slammed heavy door".

Other people thought the ‘kids had fallen out of bed’ and ’house including some furniture shook’.

This latest seismic activity follows two events earlier this year - one on May 13 and another struck on April 12. They both measured 3 on the Earthquake Magnitude Scale.

And there were two more towards the end of 2025 - a 3.4 magnitude earthquake hitting Silverdale on December 4, followed by a 2.5 magnitude quake on December 19.

The 3.4 magnitude earthquake was reported as the third strongest recorded in the UK in 2025.

The UK experiences around 100 earthquakes each year. A magnitude 4 earthquake occurs roughly every two years, while a magnitude 5 or above event happens every 10 to 20 years.
