Officers from Trading Standards and Lancashire Police descended upon the market earlier this week as part of a joint sting, where they were joined by representatives of brands whose works had been stolen.

There, they found £32,200 worth of counterfeit toys and counterfeit clothing, spread across just three market stalls.

The clothes, which included brands such as Moncler, Ralph Lauren, Stone Island, and Hugo Boss, were being sold for an average of £40 a piece - officers seized 744 items worth a combined £30,000.

The 427 toys found were worth £2,200.

Lancashire County Council has now appealed for shoppers who come across counterfeit goods to report them to the authorities.

In a statement, they said: “Counterfeit goods don’t just affect genuine brands and legitimate traders.

“Tackling their sales is an important part of protecting consumers and helping to keep our communities safe.

“Concerned residents are advised to report all counterfeit sales and intelligence to the Citizens Advice Consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133.

“Please also pass any information about illegal business practices or suspicious activity to police via 101 or online reporting.”
