Preston assault was witnessed by child, court told

A man who assaulted a woman in front of a child has been given a 20 week jail term, suspended for 18 months.

Paul Smith, 44, of New Hall Lane, Preston, was found guilty of assaulting his victim in a domestic setting on December 17.

Preston Magistrates’ Court ruled the offence was serious as the child was distressed by the incident, which had involved Smith grabbing the woman by the throat.

The court heard the victim had feared for her life during he assault.

The bench suspended the prison term to “allow for rehabilitation”.

Smith must also carry out unpaid work for 100 hours, and must pay his victim £150 compensation.

He was ordered to pay a £122 victim surcharge and £400 towards his costs.

The court also made a restraining order to protect his victim.
