Varley is charged with murder and a series of sexual and child cruelty offences.

McGowan-Fazakerley is accused of allowing the death of a child and sexual and child cruelty offences.

Both men, formerly of Staining Road, Blackpool, were wearing dark sweatshirts and appeared via a videolink from HMP Liverpool and HMP Durham prisons. They were represented by barristers Richard Vardon and Anne Whyte.

The charges were not put to the defendants and there was no application for bail.
