Council appeals for details after trees killed on the rec

It is feared two dead trees at the side of one Longridge’s most popular parks have been deliberately killed and anyone with any further information is being asked to give the council a call.

In a statement issued this week, a Ribble Valley Council spokeman said: “We are aware that the trees are dead and are taking action to remove them.

“There is evidence to suggest the trees have been killed deliberately and anyone with information is asked to contact the council in complete confidence.”

The two dead trees - believed to be a former lime and sycamore - are on Drivers Walk, at the Kestor Lane entrance to the recreational ground.

A former Longridge resident, who works as an arboriculturalist and tree consultant and comes back to the town regularly, told the News this week he also believed the two trees - one of which he says was a mature lime tree and the other a semi-mature sycamore - have been killed deliberately and had contacted the council about it.

He said he could clearly see holes in the bark of the lime which, be believed, had been drilled around the trunk’s circumference before some kind of poisonous substance such as battery acid or oil had been poured in.

Also, the bark of the trunk of the sycamore has been stripped off.

“They are public trees for the whole town and it is obvious these trees have been poisoned,” he said.

He added lots of people walked there daily.
