Clitheroe nature reserve could soon link up to town centre, traffic-free - here's what's planned

“Primrose Nature Reserve belongs to this community, and this path is about making sure as many people as possible can enjoy it”.

A nature reserve in the heart of Clitheroe could soon link up with the town centre - if new plans are approved.

Primrose Community Nature Trust has applied to Ribble Valley Borough Council (RVBC) for permission to extend the existing footpath through to the northern edge of the site by 95m.

Made possible by a grant from Ribble Valley Borough Council, the new route would run from Greenacre Street via Woone Lane back street, along the boundary of St James' School, and into the reserve at the flat bridge.

A statement on the Trust’s Facebook page said: “Whether you're a dog walker, a family, or just someone who fancies a green stroll into town, this path is for you. A huge thank you to St James' CE Primary School — whose support made the whole route possible — and to Beck Development for allowing part of the path to cross their land. The school will also gain direct reserve access for Forest School sessions and environmental education.

“As our Chair of the Trustees Richard Stephenson put it: ‘Primrose Nature Reserve belongs to this community, and this path is about making sure as many people as possible can enjoy it.’”

A site survey submitted by the Trust said that the footpath footprint encompasses a small section of ‘artificially unvegetated unsealed surface and modified grassland’ within the school grounds, passes through a wall and then runs through an open area of dense bramble scrub and a small portion of lowland mixed deciduous woodland to meet the existing footpath.

The majority of the work will be undertaken in an area of bramble scrub and that it’s loss is “not considered significant to flora in the locality”, adding: “The proposals provide the opportunity to enhance this area of homogenous habitat adjacent to the woodland long-term to create a more varied mosaic of mixed scrub with glades and standard trees.”

A decision will be made in coming weeks by RVBC.
