And so today we're journeying back in time to 1966 - the year that England won the World Cup and a time which is rapidly retreating in the rear-view mirror given that it's almost 60 year ago at this stage. Here are some of our best archive pictures from those bygone days...

29. Fishergate, Preston May 27th 1966 Of interest is the Policeman on point duty, once a common sight in and around Preston. His only customer it seems is a chap on a bicycle. On the right, Jackson The Tailor's store occupies prime place at the corner of Fishergate and Cheapside. The building is presently occupied by Ann Summers. Just out of view on the left corner is Nottingham house, seller of gowns and formal apparal. The next store sporting a curved marquee is Barratts, Northampton Footwear with Freeman Hardy & Willis Burlington Footwear just visible behind the lamp post.

30. Please find herewith a photo that may be of interest. It was taken in Lourdes in 1966, during the Lancaster Diocesan pilgrimage and shows the brancardiers (stretcher bearers) who, together with the handmaids (female helpers) assisted the nurses and doctors with the sick pilgrims. The pilgrimage, which included many from Preston and district, flew from Blackpool to Lourdes via Tarbes airport in south-west France. It was possibly the first Lancaster diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes to go by air rather than overland. Sent in by reader David Hughes
