The history behind Haslam Park is fascinating.
In 1908, Miss Mary Haslam gifted some 46 hectares of land to the Preston Corporation to be used for a public park or recreation ground in memory of her father. With her wishes respected, the resulting haven was Haslam Park, which has boasted facilities such as a bowling green, an aviary, a swimming pool, and sprawling green areas over the decades. Check out some of our best archive pictures of the park down the decades.

This picture shows the opening of Haslam Park Aviary in 1934. The aviary was presented to the town by Councillor John J. Ward. Here the Mayor of Preston, Mrs. AV Pimblett, accepts the aviary from Miss Peggy Ward on behalf of the children of Preston. The aviary was a delightful building having an overall thatched roof. It was situated behind the Park keepers house near the east gate Photo: RETRO
