'˜We've not gone away' say Preston's market traders

Market traders in Preston are urging people to visit their new home, after they moved while major work begins to build the new market hall.

They are now under the smaller Fish Market canopy, but say they are “struggling” to attract visitors.

Frank Cowell, who sells divan beds, has said traders need more support to let people know they are still there, and open for business.

He said: “We are still here and, as the refurb is going on, please come and support the traders who are still keeping Preston going.

“It’s the same service.”
He said, currently, people were not walking past the Fish Market, but said he hoped new signs may help. He said: “Maybe when they go up we might see some more footfall, I really hope so, but some of the lads are really struggling.”

Coun Peter Rankin, leader of Preston Council, said the authority was committed to promoting the markets “throughout and beyond the works”.

He said: “All outdoor traders have moved over to the recently renovated Fish Market canopy now the building of the new market hall has started.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and thank traders for adapting to their new temporary home and hope they enjoy trading from this great retail environment.

“Installation of permanent signage will begin over the next few days - directing customers to both indoor and outdoor markets - with temporary signs already fitted in the interim.

“I can reassure traders we are committed to promoting the markets throughout and beyond the works.

“We are now entering the most challenging and exciting phase of the markets project and thank traders for their continued patience and understanding throughout the coming months.”
