Two-year-old Narla was struck by a car whilst on an evening walk with a member of her owner's family on Monday (October 26).

Both her and the young man were left injured in Plungington Road, near the junction with Blackpool Road, after a Volkswagen Polo hit them and failed to stop at the scene at around 10pm.

A 19-year-old man, from Preston, has been arrested in connection with the hit and run. He has been bailed until November 23 pending further enquiries, say police.

Narla is now in the care of a specialist and has undergone critical surgery today to save her life.

Her heartbroken owner, Olivia Hampson, has been told that Narla's treatment could cost as much as £12,000.

To add to the family's heartbreak, Narla has just had puppies and two of those pups remain at home, awaiting their mother's return.

"Narla's having the operation today and hopefully she will be OK," said Olivia.

"Her spine is badly fractured and she is paralysed in one of her back legs. Her other back leg is fractured as well.

"To help save her, we’ve been advised that it’s in her best interest to see a specialist. She’s the most loving family dog who has just had her own litter and two of her babies are still at home missing their mum.

"There’s a lot of risks we have had to take but we couldn’t just let her go, not when there is still a chance."

A fundraiser has been set up to help Narla's family cover the cost of her treatment and Olivia has expressed her appreciation to those who have shown support.

"Thank you so much to you all for your support and kind words. We couldn’t thank you all enough. We appreciate it very much.

"Narla didn’t deserve a low life scum bag hitting her and driving away, leaving her in pain in the middle of the road.

"She’s amazing and we couldn’t ask for a better family dog. So please, if anyone can help, any amount big or small will help towards her long recovery.

"We just want her back home and healthy where she belongs."
