What a Wicked opening night

Thespectacular UK touring production of Wicked opened at the Liverpool Empire Theatre to rapturous applause, and rightly so.

For a city usually associated with red and blue, green was queen at the special gala night as the cast of Wicked, often referred to as a ‘prequel’ to The Wizard of Oz, were repaid with standing ovations as the curtain fell.

The story by Gregory Maguire takes place before, during and after the familiar Oz tale and focuses on Emily Tierney’s , Glinda and Ashleigh Gray’s, Elphaba.

The leading ladies’ vocals complement rather than compete and Gray, in particular, left this audience member withgoosebumps following her rendition of the showstopping, ‘Defying Gravity’ number.

Despite Samuel Edwards’ nervy performance as love-interest, Fiyero, leaving me a little flat the show is truly magical and a Wicked night out.
