The Hound rides again

Chorley Little Theatre’s biggest production of the year, their take on the great detective Sherlock Holmes most famous adventure, The Hound of the Baskervilles, opens this Monday.

Written and directed by artistic director Mark Jones, this new adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel, by Chorley Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society, adds a modern twist.

With David Reid as the famous sleuth and Matthew Routledge as Dr Watson, the play is suitable for ages 14 plus, and runs from Monday to Saturday. Tickets are available from Malcolm’s Musicland on 01257 264362.

Next Wednesday sees the opening night of the 20th One Act Play Festival at Preston Playhouse Theatre, presented by The Broughton Players and featuring three plays each evening.

First up is The Longton Players production of Cracking Up, a 20-minute drama by American playwright Peter M Floyd, followed by The Broughton Players’ Plaster, an excerpt from a comedy called Visiting Hour, by Richard Harris of Stepping Out fame.

Finally, The Grimsargh Players present Last Tango in Little Grimsargh, another in the Little Grimley comedy series by David Tristram.

On Thursday, Donna Keller’s dark comedy, Having a Drink with Cathy, is the choice of the Talented Chicks and the Odd Cock Theatre Company, while the Preston Gilbert and Sullivan Society offer Jimmie Chinn’s Maureen – actually the second half of his play, A Different Way Home.

The final Thursday offering is Lynn Brittney’s moving A Two Berth Life, by The Broughton Players.

Friday opens with Rita Sharp’s Dark Knights Theatre performing her own Game On, followed by Harlequins from Freckleton with Stewart Boston’s drama, Dialogue, after which The Hoghton Players from Hoghton Village have selected a Jimmie Chinn comedy, From Here to the Library.

Just two plays take up Saturday night; The Hall Players present IED, by Welsh writer Vic Mills, and Preston Drama Club reprise Alan Ayckbourn’s comedy, Mother Figure, which featured in last year’s Once in a Preston Guild show.

At Lytham’s Lowther Pavilion, the St Annes Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society present Broadway smash hit musical 42nd Street from Wednesday, June 19 to Saturday, June 22.
