John Tams, best known for his role as Rifleman Daniel Hagman in TV period drama Sharpe and his work on the stage show War Horse, leads his rock-folk outfit Home Service into a gig at Wigan Parish Church tonight.

The band was founded by John in the 1980s to bring the themes of traditional English folk songs back up to date, and will play at the historic place of worship in Wigan town centre after heading back on the road following a reunion in 2011.

The concert, part of the Acoustic Roots gigs organised by David Cartlidge, will be particularly special as John visited the borough five years ago on the very first night of Acoustic Roots.

John said: “I remember my previous visit to Wigan went very well, the place was full and the audience was terrific.

“I’m looking forward to coming back this time with the bigger band and seeing what sort of reaction it gets.

“It’s a beautiful church. We’re selective about where we choose to play and we like to perform at interesting venues.”

Home Service play at Wigan Parish Church tonight. Tickets are £17.50 on the door.
