Family fun at reserve

Three 20-minute pond dipping sessions take place at 11am, 11.30 and noon on Saturday from a special dipping platform at the reserve, which is located just off junction 31 of the M6 at Salmesbury.

They offer the chance for visitors (children must be accompanied by an adult) to roll up their sleeves and hunt for insects and other small animals that live in fresh waters.

Expect to find anything from a diving beetle to a caddisfly larva and staff will be on hand to tell you about the creatures’ behaviour.

No previous knowledge is required. The cost is £1 per person, no need to book.

If you are reading this on Friday morning, and looking for some last minute ideas to keep the children occupied, Brockholes is hosting a craft workshop from 12.30-2.30pm. It is run by eco-artist Chrissy Webster and suitable for over sixes, or over threes with an adult helper. It costs £7.50. From 2-4pm a Wild Families Mythical Creature Photo Scavenger Hunt lets families use their cameras in hunting for mythical creatures. The cost is £3 per person and £10 for families (2+2) while under twos go free. Booking is recommended.

Next week, a Toddle Together takes place at 11am on Wednesday, September 4. This free one-hour walk will be led by two guided walk leaders on buggy friendly footpaths who will teach the little ones about the wildlife. No need to book.

A Mid-Week Meander takes place at 1.30pmthat Wednesday. The 90-minute tour will see a guide talking about the reserve’s history and its conservation aims. A £1 donation is suggested.
