A quarter century of jazz

The programme for January 23 will include:

1989: Appropriately, the year’s first session will look at the jazz scene 25 years ago, when mainstream, fusion and post-modern vied for attention.

Jazz Alphabet: The penultimate episode - U,V,W - of a popular series.

TV Jazz: In case you hadn’t noticed, jazz enlivens many small-screen programmes; here are memorable themes.

The programme for February 27 will include:

In Search of Soul: An ongoing quest to identify the life force which animates jazz.

Rabbit: A celebration of alto sax player Johnny Hodges, who illuminated jazz throughout the Duke Ellington era, and long thereafter.

Sing Me a Swing Song: Benny Goodman was called The King of Swing - but scores of fine musicians brought drive and lyricism to the Swing Era.

The society meets monthly at Bardsea’s Malt Kiln Village Hall, down the coast road from Ulverston, where it presents jazz recordings from all eras, with expert commentary, on high quality audio equipment.

Sessions start 7pm, and refreshments are included in the modest charge of £2. Newcomers, whether hardened jazzers or absolute beginners, will always find a warm welcome.
