A decent two-for-one on the chain gang

With Papa John’s opening its first central Lancashire branch just yards from my house in Penwortham, it would be rude not to try it.

I hadn’t even heard of the pizza chain until the signs started going up, so I was keen to see what we’d been missing out on.

I thought it might be just like Dominoes... and it was. With a similar menu, similar prices and the same ‘Two for Tuesday’ offer.

I decided to take advantage of the buy-one-get-one-free deal, after spotting the Hawaiian Special I fancied would normally have cost £14.99 and husband Chris’s Chicken Club would have been £16.99 (ouch).

At £16.99 (you pay for the most expensive), I felt I’d got a reasonable deal, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Although the pizzas were not piping hot, they were tasty and didn’t feel greasy.

Mine, the ‘authentic thin crust’ version was crispy and light, and covered in plenty of tomato sauce, just how I like it.

Toppings were plentiful, with thin strips of smoky ham and juicy slices of mushroom and pineapple. Chris’s pizza had a thicker base, but was light and crisp, and again, covered with a good amount of good quality toppings.

Apart from the standard menu price – paying the best part of £32 for two takeaway pizzas is surely expensive in anyone’s language – the only gripe I had was with the garlic ‘special sauce’ that came with Chris’s meal.

It looked and tasted like cheap, melted margarine, with little in the way of garlic flavour.
