The Coppice School team takes on the Yorkshire Three Peaks

What began as a fundraising discussion during a school residential quickly grew into an ambitious challenge: conquering the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

Since June, staff from The Coppice School have been training tirelessly, undertaking a series of demanding walks, including routes from Blackpool to Leyland, Darwen Tower, White Coppice and Great Hill. Their goal was to prepare for the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge while raising money for much-needed equipment to support pupils at the school.

With school budgets being stretched further than ever, providing specialist resources and equipment is becoming increasingly difficult. When asked how fundraising could support the school, the School Council shared their wish for a basket swing in the playground, a valuable resource for learners who benefit from sensory support and assistance with emotional regulation.

At 4.45am on Saturday September 12, a determined team of 16 staff members set off from Bamber Bridge, ready to take on the challenge and raise funds for some of the most vulnerable learners in South Ribble.

The team began their first ascent of Pen-y-Ghent at around 6.30am. Conditions were far from ideal, with relentless rain soaking every member of the group. However, their commitment to ensuring that Coppice pupils have access to the support and resources they need kept spirits high as they reached the first summit.

A dedicated support team was waiting to provide hot drinks, food and dry clothing before the walkers set off once again towards their second peak, Whernside. Battling strong winds and persistent rain, the team continued to push forward with remarkable determination.

After several gruelling hours, countless miles and significant climbs and descents, the final peak came into view. Despite low cloud obscuring the summit of Ingleborough, the team persevered through the challenging conditions and successfully completed their third and final peak.

Sarah Seddon, Headteacher at The Coppice School, said: “Each and every member of staff put our learners at the heart of their mission. They demonstrated exceptional teamwork, resilience and spirit throughout the challenge. They supported one another when it mattered most and I am incredibly proud of everything they have achieved.”

The team showed incredible grit, determination and commitment in their efforts to raise funds for Coppice learners. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors from the local community, including Leyland Trucks Helping Hand, the challenge has raised an impressive £4,586 so far, putting the school well on its way to purchasing the much-needed basket swing and secure fencing.

Donations will remain open until 30th September 2026 for anyone wishing to support this very special cause.
