Preston primary school children get into the real spirit of Christmas
Children from St Francis', St Mary’s and St Ignatius Catholic primary schools are embracing the real spirit of Christmas this year.
This week, they have hosted special assemblies in support of CAFOD’s ‘World Gifts’ programme. The ethical gift giving initiative is designed to help vulnerable communities around the world – for example, those fleeing conflict and people whose livelihoods have been destroyed by natural disasters.

Vicki Berry, Headteacher at St Ignatius, said: “As a diverse and inclusive school community, we believe in the power of global solidarity. Supporting CAFOD and the World Gifts project reflects our commitment to helping those in need and promoting justice across the world.
“These gifts are not just symbolic, they provide life-changing resources for millions in developing countries.”
James Gilmour, Headteacher at St Mary’s, praised the initiative for teaching the “importance of compassion and the power of collective action to make a difference beyond our own community”.
People seeking to buy a present with a difference this year can choose from a wide range of gifts including firewood for families in Ukraine facing extreme winter temperatures, helping displaced Syrian children learn to read, and providing warm meals, shelter, and essential items to refugees.
Each World Gift comes with a card to give to the recipient, showing how their gift is changing lives. You can also add stocking fillers, from chocolates to devotional items.
Christine Dewhurst, CAFOD School Volunteer, said: “We’re delighted that pupils from St Francis’ primary school are supporting such a wonderful cause. These gifts have a huge impact and can transform the lives of thousands of people.”
