Astley View residents celebrate the legacy of Sir John Betjeman at monthly poetry club
Residents at Astley View Care Home in Chorley came together this week for their monthly poetry club, this time exploring the work of former Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman.
Residents spent time reading and listening to some of Betjeman’s poems, with his take on everyday life and changing times prompting plenty of conversation around the table, as people shared their thoughts on the lines that stood out to them. The relaxed morning was enjoyed with cheese and crackers, giving residents the chance to sit together, take their time with the poetry and enjoy each other’s company.

The monthly poetry club is now a regular part of life at Astley View Care Home, offering residents the opportunity to stay engaged with literature and take part in something that feels both familiar and enjoyable.
The Home Manager, Christina Durnan, at Astley View said: “People really enjoy the sessions. We tend to focus on poets that feel familiar, like Betjeman, alongside introducing a few new ones as well. A lot of our residents have a real interest in books and poetry, so it is something they naturally engage with.

Pairing poetry with a relaxed setting, and something simple like cheese and crackers, made for a lovely morning. It is something people can take part in at their own pace, and it is always well received.”
