91-year-old great granddad Tony Newton smashed 500 mile cycle challenge returning to a rousing welcome

91 -year-old (92 in August) great granddad, Tony Newton, smashed the epic 500 mile North of England cycle challenge returning to a rousing welcome in Heskin, Chorley on Friday.  The sun shone and the crowd cheered and waved as he came into view having ridden 557.6 miles in aid of Inspire Youth Zone, Chorley.

He set out 13 days earlier from the exact same spot and battled rain, wind, punctures and accommodation problems to complete his journey. At one point he spent the night in a massage chair at Ferry Bridge services when his booked airbnb turned out to have closed down.

Using a mix of roads and cycle paths Tony travelled from Lancashire, across Derbyshire and Yorkshire reaching the coast at Hull.  He then headed north through Bridlington, Scarborough and Whitby up to Newcastle before crossing back along the Hadrian’s Wall coast to coast cycleway to Carlisle; returning South through Penrith, Shap and Lancaster and finally finishing back in Heskin. He covered 557.6 miles with a staggering total climb of 30,748 feet in less than two weeks.

Tony already raised a staggering £8,191 and is hoping to reach his just-giving target of £10,000, which will be match funded by St James Place Wealth Management.

Granddaughter, Hannah, said We are so proud of granddad and everything he has achieved and every penny he raises will help the young people who go to Inspire Youth Zone.”If you would like to help Tony reach his target and support more young people, his just giving page is still open
