Greg doing his bit to help local community sports club

For Preston's own Invictus Games gold-winning athlete, providing his local sports club with a fresh set of kits would be the perfect send off.

Greg Dunnings, from Fulwood, is joining the fire service in mid-January and the chances are that he will no longer be able to play for the Lancashire Bombers Wheelchair Basketball Club, based in the city centre.

As the perfect send-off, the 26-year-old is looking to raise £600 to buy the club a fresh set of kit by running the 36th My Protein Preston 10 Mile Road Race on Sunday November 19.

Greg said: “I’ve been with the club for about two years now. Having competed at the Invictus Games I know the benefit of adaptive sports, and one of the biggest components of being in a team sport is uniform.

“Due to a lack of funding, the club has unfortunately been unable to afford kits for the members. I start in the fire service on January 15 so it’s a leaving gift for the club.”

For Greg – an ex-serviceman who was seriously injured in a bomb explosion whilst on patrol in Afghanistan – the Lancashire Bombers are more than just a sports club.

Greg said: “The Lancashire Bombers is a participation club. It’s about getting everyone involved and getting people feeling part of a team.”

Two weeks ago the club was visited by Prince Harry, pictured, at the University of Central Lancashire Sports Arena.

Greg said: “Harry talked to me about the Invictus Games and I explained how adaptive sports have helped me.

“I think clubs like the Lancashire Bombers are massively important and I love coming down here.”
