Everyday athletes to take centre stage as groundbreaking Arena Games

After a hugely successful launch in Newcastle, innovative fitness competition The Arena Games is heading to Manchester this summer, giving hundreds of everyday athletes the chance to compete under the lights at one of the UK's most iconic live entertainment venues.

Hundreds of competitors from across the UK will swap local gyms for one of Britain's biggest sporting stages when The Arena Games arrives at Manchester's AO Arena on Saturday 1 August.

While major arenas regularly host world championship boxing, elite sport and global music superstars, The Arena Games is turning that model on its head by handing the spotlight to everyday athletes.

From teachers and emergency workers to parents, coaches and office workers, competitors from all walks of life will have the opportunity to experience what it's like to perform on one of the biggest stages in British sport and entertainment.

Following a hugely successful inaugural event at Utilita Arena Newcastle earlier this year, organisers are bringing their unique CrossFit-inspired competition to the home of some of the world's biggest sporting occasions and concerts with one simple ambition - putting everyday athletes on the big stage.

Unlike traditional functional fitness competitions, The Arena Games transforms an arena into an immersive sporting spectacle, complete with dramatic athlete walk-ons, arena lighting, smoke effects, giant screens, live scoring, professional commentary, DJs, broadcast-quality production and an electric atmosphere usually reserved for elite athletes.

Founder Simon Michael Mooney, said: "The vision has always been incredibly simple - put everyday athletes on the big stage.

"People train before work, after work and at weekends. They dedicate hours every single week to becoming fitter, stronger and healthier, yet when competition day arrives they're often competing in school sports halls, industrial units or small gyms.

"We wanted to change that.

"We wanted people to experience what it's like to walk out under arena lights, hear their name announced, compete in front of a crowd and genuinely feel like a professional athlete for the day. That's what The Arena Games is all about."

The competition sees teams of four - two men and two women - tackle four to five demanding workouts featuring barbells, dumbbells, gymnastics and endurance equipment in front of family, friends and fitness fans.

With no qualifiers or ballots, places are allocated on a first come, first served basis, giving athletes of all abilities the opportunity to experience a level of production and atmosphere rarely seen anywhere in UK functional fitness.

Every athlete will receive a full arena walk-on before stepping onto the competition floor, complete with professional introductions, live commentary, giant screens and live scoring throughout each workout.

Combined with immersive lighting, music, a packed spectator bowl and a professionally produced livestream, organisers believe the event offers one of the closest experiences an amateur athlete can get to competing as a professional.

The concept has already struck a chord with the fitness community.

The debut Newcastle event attracted around 360 athletes, more than 400 spectators and around 100 volunteers, event staff and arena personnel, creating an audience of almost 1,000 people inside the venue.

Athletes travelled from across the UK - and even Malta - to compete, while around 30 per cent of attendees stayed in hotels or other accommodation during the weekend, providing a welcome boost for the local visitor economy.

Across launch week alone, The Arena Games generated more than one million social media impressions, while competitors described it as "the best competition I've ever been to" and a "game changer for the industry".

The concept was developed by events professional Simon alongside respected CrossFit coach Kat, combining years of experience in live events, marketing and large-scale production with a deep understanding of the functional fitness community.

Having spent much of his career producing major live events, Simon said he was surprised by the lack of production value across many functional fitness competitions and believed athletes deserved an experience that matched the commitment they put into their training.

He said: "CrossFit has one of the most passionate and committed communities you'll ever come across, but we felt the event experience hadn't evolved in the same way the sport had.

"People sacrifice so much to compete. They build their lives around training and constantly pushing themselves to improve. We wanted to create something that rewarded that commitment and inspired even more people to get involved.

"We're not just creating another competition. We're creating an experience people will remember for the rest of their lives."

The Manchester event will feature three competition divisions – Locked In (Rx), On Job (Intermediate) and In The Mix (Scaled) - welcoming experienced competitors and those stepping onto a major arena competition floor for the very first time.

The AO Arena will be transformed into a purpose-built competition venue featuring one of the UK's largest gymnastics rigs, capable of accommodating up to 80 athletes at once, alongside tonnes of competition equipment, professional lighting, giant scoreboards, live scoring technology and a growing vendor village showcasing some of the biggest names in fitness, nutrition and sports apparel.

Spectators can expect live DJs, expert commentary, big-screen coverage, local food vendors and a professionally produced YouTube livestream, allowing friends, family and viewers around the world to follow every workout live.

Manchester was chosen as the second host city after organisers discovered it had produced the largest number of travelling teams to the inaugural Newcastle event outside the North East.

For Simon, the move to AO Arena feels like a natural next step.

He said: "Manchester has always been one of the UK's great sporting cities. Growing up, whenever the biggest tours or sporting events were announced, Manchester was always on the list. It's somewhere I've travelled to countless times over the years and bringing The Arena Games here feels incredibly special.

"Newcastle proved there's a real appetite for what we're doing. The response completely exceeded our expectations and gave us the confidence to take the next step.

"We believe functional fitness is a sleeping giant. Our job is to showcase it in a way that excites athletes, inspires newcomers and creates an atmosphere spectators genuinely want to be part of."

While Manchester represents only the second chapter in The Arena Games story, organisers already have ambitious plans to establish a nationwide series, with cities including Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff and London all part of a long-term vision.

"Global is ultimately the dream," Simon added, "but serving the UK is our priority.

"We want to build something athletes aspire to compete in every year. Somewhere people come to challenge themselves, support their friends and become part of an incredible community.

"If someone walks off that competition floor believing they've just had the best sporting experience of their life, then we've achieved exactly what we set out to do."
