Alan who said he likes walking because it helps keep the weight off, will begin the walk on July 6 and hopes to finish five days later on July 11.

He expects to average 14 miles a day and is funding the walk himself so that all donations will go to the charity.

Alan, whose daughter in law, Cathy is Conductive Education Classroom Assistant at Rainbow House, said: “Rainbow House provides a unique service for the rehabilitation of people with disabilities through conductive education and physiotherapy.

“It is crucial to the well-being of so many children, young people and adult and even more impressive when you realise that they have to raise all of their own funds.

“Any money that I can raise for them will be well spent.”

Carole Cochrane, Chief Executive, Rainbow House, said “It is fantastic that Alan is raising funds for us as every penny counts.

“He is going to use a GPS system to measure his travel each day and we look forward to hearing about his progress.”

Anyone who would like to support Alan can donate at www.justgiving.com/Alan-Houston5 or there will be sponsorship forms at Leyland and Farington Social Club who are also supporting a raffle to raise funds which is being co-ordinated by Len Dobbs.
