'˜Be inspired by Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid's art'

Becky Atherton, of community arts group ArtFull, will lead the session in Preston creating self-portraits out of collage at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery.

Her colleague at ArtFull Bernie Velvick said: “Lubaina used cardboard and newspaper cuttings for her installation which is based on a classical painting by English artist William Hogarth.

“Becky will be using some of the same techniques in her workshop. It’s about re-purposing things and changing their value.

“The self-portrait workshop is called Face Value - making self-portraits says a lot about how people feel about themselves.

“It’s really interesting, you can get an idea about how they feel about themselves so it’s a way of exploring that and also how you think you are seen by other people as well.”

Both Becky and Bernie are familiar with Lubaina’s work as they studied under her at The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

Lubaina’s exhibition Hard Times, which opened at the Harris in March, has been temporarily dismantled over concerns that a leaking roof might damage the artwork. The leak has now been fixed but a reopening date is yet to be confirmed.Face Value takes place on May 12 from 1.30pm until 3.30pm at The Harris. The workshop is free and is designed for families with children over six years old.

The Face Value workshop is one of several at the Harris which are inspired by Lubaina’s Hard Times exhibition. Others include:

• Dinnertime Discussion: What is Art For? It takes place on April 6, 12.30pm -1.30pm. Lead by Bernie Velvick.

• Let Yourself Go! This poetry workshop will be lead by poet Joseph Barrow on April 14 , 1pm-3pm.

• Persona, Play & Puppets is a workshop with artist Faye Spencer exploring how people represent themselves through performance. It takes place on April 18, 6pm-8pm.

• Memento on April 21 explore personal journeys and histories. From 1.30pm.
