It’s the closest he comes to our neck of the woods so book early (Ticketmaster/Arena) as his recent concert at Manchester’s 02 Academy sold out in 20 minutes flat.

He’s won rave reviews for his new album These People, his first album since 2010’s United Nations Of Sound and features orchestration from Wil Malone, who worked on The Verve’s Northern Soul Urban Hymns, as well as his 2000 debut solo album Alone With Everybody. Ashcroft formed The Verve in 1990 with friends from Winstanley College in Wigan - playing pubs as if they were stadiums. “I was trying to get across how much power you need to smash that ceiling.” He later performed a homecoming gig in 1998 before 33,000 fans at Haigh Hall and called it “reversing that cap-in-hand rubbish - brilliant.”

• Tickets are also on sale for another wish list topper tour date - The Specials play Blackpool’s Empress Ballroom on October 27. The band took the brave decision to tour on after the tragic loss of drummer and founder member John Bradbury in December and remain in the pantheon of punk with a heady mix of ska/reggae.
