The play was a huge hit for Alan Ayckbourn in 1967 and was successfully revived in 2013.

It is a four hander and opens with young lovers, Ginny and Greg, discussing her plans for the weekend.

Greg is jealous, conscious that a former lover is showering her with gifts and besieging her with calls, about all of which she is evasive.

Philip and Sheila live in some luxury in the Home Counties. He is a serial philanderer and she is stuck with him.

The cast is an engaging mix of newcomers and experience.

A spokesman said: “Phil Allan who plays Greg is a newcomer to the stage. The Liverpudlian is an experienced RE teacher at a local secondary school.

“Sarah Handley is also a teacher – at a Cleveleys primary school. A superb soprano with experience of grand opera, operetta and musical theatre, a straight play is a new venture for her. Dubbed ‘The Maid of Buttermere’ by director David Twizell she makes an exciting and engaging Ginny – a worthy successor to Felicity Kendall.

“Stephanie Heney is hugely experienced actor who has performed many times with Poulton Drama. A talented comic actor, she brings out the intricacies of the 60s’ wife, Sheila.

Stuart Holden has appeared in many character roles. His many years as a local solicitor will doubtless have been an excellent preparation for the role of grumpy philanderer, Philip.

“Director Dave Twizzell, along with the production team, are busy scouring the local charity shops for properties and furnishings while the stage team are putting together a set that will bring the locations to life.”

The Plant Place, Poulton, are kindly providing the garden furniture featured.

The play will be staged at Thornton Little Theatre, from March 16 -19. Tel: (01253) 200737 for tickets.
