The University of Central Lancashire wants to refresh its brand identity and logo – and wants staff, students, business partners and the local community to decide whether to phase out the current red rose moniker in favour of greater the “forgotten” University Coat of Arms, either in its original or in an updated form.

On Monday, the university will be asking for the opinions of the Preston public when the different logo options go on display at UCLan’s new shop in the St George’s Centre.

These include the current roses, the original coat of arms unveiled when the university was created in 1993 and a new design.

Any brand change will eventually be decided by the university board, when the consultation is over, and a local graduate start-up firm will be tasked with the job.

Last year UCLan unveiled a £200m masterplan for its campus redevelopment and is eager to capitalise on the momentum and strengthen its brand recognition both nationally and internationally.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mike Thomas said: “I think our Coat of Arms is a major asset and we should be making more of it.

“It really helps to symbolise our pride at being at the heart of the community.”

Any new branding will be up and ready by the start of the new academic year, the university added.
