TransPennine Express warns customers ahead of Sunday timetable changes - everything you need to know

TransPennine Express (TPE) is reminding customers that a new timetable will be introduced this Sunday, bringing changes that include additional services, more capacity, and increased travel options across the North and into Scotland.

The updated timetable, introduced across the rail industry, comes into effect from Sunday 14 December. One of the main changes is on the East Coast Mainline, where services between Newcastle and Edinburgh will increase from five to eight per day.

This will add around 2,000 extra seats each day, with trains running roughly every two hours, including a new early morning service arriving in Edinburgh at 07:20. TPE has worked with other rail operators to help deliver the updated East Coast Mainline timetable, which will offer more frequent and faster services, along with increased capacity.

On TPE’s South route between Liverpool Lime Street and Cleethorpes via Manchester and Sheffield, most Sunday services will now operate with six-car trains, increasing capacity for weekend travel.

The 08:09 Sheffield to Liverpool Lime Street service will also begin calling at Dore and Totley on Sundays, providing an additional stop for local travellers. Passengers will also see a new 08:13 Sunday service from Liverpool Lime Street to Cleethorpes, and a new late-night Saturday service to Liverpool Lime Street, departing Manchester Piccadilly at 23:07.

Further changes include increased capacity between Hull and Liverpool Lime Street, with most services up to 19:00 now running with five or six carriages. This will provide around 3,500 additional seats each week, aimed at meeting demand during busy evening hours.

Andrew McClements, Customer Experience & Transformation Director at TPE, said: “We’d like to reminder customers of our timetable change this Sunday, in line with the rest of the rail industry.

“While the majority of our services remain the same, we’d encourage customers to double-check their journeys before travelling. We’re pleased to be introducing these improvements that offer more choice and greater flexibility.”

Customers are also advised to check their journeys and allow extra time, as engineering work will be taking place across parts of the network over the coming months.
