We kick-off today’s meeting at York with a race over a mile and a half.

Getting straight down to business, my selection here will be the William Haggas trained Satellite. Still unexposed, this looks like an ideal opportunity to cash in on a handy weight for age allowance. Disappointing last time when trying this trip for the first time (missing the break and never looked like getting involved) when sent off 9/4 favourite. More was expected that day and another chance is given at what looks to be a nice each way price in an open looking race despite him looking a very tricky ride.

The biggest threat to my selection has to be last year’s winner Chancery who has dropped to a good mark, only 3lb higher than when winning this last year. Capable jockey Danny Tudhope takes the ride and could give David O’Meara his first winner of the week having gone so close with the stables Move In Time here on Wednesday.

At a bigger price the Mark Johnston trained Salutation could also get involved stepped back up to this trip.

Satellite (E/W)

The second race of the meeting is over a marathon flat distance of two miles.

The ultra consistent Cavalryman heads the market. With its form this year as good as ever, both at home and abroad, he demands respect in this field. According to the betting he only has one horse to be worried about here and that is the Dermot Weld trained Pale Mimosa. That said however I don’t think that she will be able to compete in a battle with the eight year old Goodwood Cup winner even with the advantage of youth and relatively low mileage on her side.

Cavalryman is a winner at this level, at this track and at this distance this year and I expect another bold performance with Kieren Fallon on board.

The Queens horse Estimate is sure to be supported, due to connections and should show up better this time. If it reproduces anything close to her Ascot form she’ll be a certanty to fill one of the places.

Of the rest Angel Gabriel could squeak a place if some of the principles do not get the race run to suit and may do well at a bigger price.

Cavalryman (WIN)

Many of the older horses here look to be relatively exposed and it’s the younger horses that take my eye. The one that got my attention most of all was Glory Awaits for Kevin Ryan. Wearing a visor for the first time he looks to have a great chance here at big odds. Racing recently in better company than this the return to listed level looks to be a more realistic option and I can see him getting involved here and as such will be my each way selection.

I am also going to plump for another and my win selection is the Charlie Hills trained Cable Bay. The horse impressed me last year with a willing attitude and ability to battle it out to the line, I think he was extremely unlucky not to win some of its two year old races. Despite only a maiden win to his name I believe today’s race will be the perfect opportunity to add to his tally and if the rain gets into the ground it will only enhance this colts claims.

Of the rest Windfast could run a better race returned to listed level. Excuses last time when hampered in running, with a clearer passage this time out it could see him grab a minor place.

We continue the action with the showpiece group one race The Nunthorpe Stakes.

Sole Power, Take Cover and Rangali all come here today seeking their hat-trick.

The aforementioned Sole Power won this race back in 2010. He seems to relish this distance and was flying home in his latest outing with an amazing turn of foot. The horse can follow that up today and should give another good account but at a price of 3/1 doesn’t represent great value.

Extortionist was second to the aforementioned Take Cover when these two last met, the former is now better off in the weights, thanks to an age allowance and has every chance of reversing that form today. He pulled away from the field when he won at Sandown back in July and is underestimated at your peril and has to go on my short list.

Jamie Spencer is not having the best of season’s this year and stated yesterday that he will be retiring at the end of the season. He rides a lively contender in Hot Streak who, unlike Spencer, has had a very impressive season so far. The horse didn’t seem to turn up in the July Cup and I think that race can be dismissed. At an each way price he poses a big threat.

These Maiden races are always a tough one to call, with just over half the field having a run under their belt. The two that stand out on recent form are Swot and Acaster Malbis, who were only just beaten in their respective runs. Richard Hannon has won this twice in the past and the latter should go close again today but couldn’t be backed at the prices.

Dissolution came all the way from the back of the field to show a very promising run in the first race of his career and for that effort alone is definitely worth a few pennies. David Brown’s Bright Flash wasn’t disgraced on her maiden race which looked in slightly better company than some these have raced in and is certainly a lively danger to my selections.

A couple of these debutants catch the eye, Foreign Diplomat cost 160,000 Guineas, Erik The Red cost 180,000 Guineas and has been entered into a couple of big races later in the year. That said however Muffarreh is probably the best bred out of all the newcomers, he is related to a number of winners and with an entry into the Dewhurst Stakes looks a smart prospect and worth an each way shot.

We end the day with a mile race for three year olds.

This looks to be a wide open race with a few of these horses in good form as of late. Halation is seeking his hat-trick and despite being raised five pounds for his latest win should be able to shrug that off today to go close. At such a smart price the horse is definitely worth an each way shout.

Maverick Wave was finally beaten last time out at Newmarket which was on soft ground that didn’t seem to be to his liking and with an abundance of rain yesterday has to be overlooked.

Extremity won over this trip on his first time of asking when stepped up to the mile last month, he is now seven pounds higher in the weights and is likely to struggle with that sort of rise.

Munaaser won with ease on his latest outing and could be the one to catch, he’s up a whopping twelve pounds for its last run but wasn’t even off the bridal when winning at Newmarket, he’s progressing the right way and can’t be ignored.

Moohaarib is another that looks to have a smart price, he was seeking his hat-trick when finishing third at Ascot last month, he tried to come from the back of the field in that race but couldn’t reel the leaders in quick enough on that occasion. He can race off the same mark again today and has every chance to get back to winning ways.
