This was North End's first visit to Maine Road for more than 32 years and for the 2,500 PNE supporters who made the trip it was well worth the wait.

Mind you, the travelling fans had to keep their wits about them after the game in the streets around the ground, the locals non too happy with the results.

Parkinson's big moment came in the 71st minute after Jonathan Macken had been fouled in the box.

PNE had attacked on the break after Mark Rankine seized on a mistake from Michael Brown.

Rankine's pass fed Kurt Nogan who squared for Macken.

Just as the striker was about to get in a shot, he was barged over from behind by Danny Tiatto and referee Mike Fletcher had no hesitation pointing to the penalty spot.

City protested to no avail and Parkinson almost took the net into the crowd with the spot kick.

Moments earlier at the other end, North End goalkeeper Tepi Moilanen had made a fine one-handed save to push behind a shot from Tiatto.

Moilanen produced saves after Parkinson's penalty to keep the lead in tact, denying Richard Edghill and Lee Bradbury.

PNE: Moilanen, Parkinson, Jackson, Murdock, Ludden, McKenna (Cartwright 80), Gregan, Rankine, Eyres, Harris (Macken 61), Nogan (Appleton 83).
