Jason Harris was Preston North End's super-sub

FIFA has given the green light for five substitutions to be allowed in matches when football gets underway again.

Teams would still only have three opportunities to make substitutions during play so not to disrupt the flow too much, so double subs and changes at half-time will be common place.

It is up to individual leagues and competitions to adopt the five subs rule but it is likely that will happen in the EFL and Premier League.

Potentially it gives the scope for more players to come off the bench and grab the glory as 'super subs'.

Preston North End's super-sub from years gone by has to be Jason Harris.

The striker was only at PNE for the 1998/99 season but came off the bench in 25 league games, two play-off matches and once in the FA Cup.

Harris only started 13 matches - nine in the league, two in the FA Cup and two in the Auto Windscreen Shield.

He scored seven goals, five of them when coming off the bench.

PNE manager of the day David Moyes had taken Harris on a month's trial from Leyton Orient that pre-season.

He caught the eye sufficiently to earn a one-year contract, North End paying a nominal fee for him.

Harris' debut came as a sub in a thrilling 4-3 win at Lincoln City on August 29, 1998. Two days later he came off the bench to score in a 2-0 victory over Chesterfield at Deepdale.

The following week, Harris struck within three minutes of coming on as a half-time sub in a 2-2 draw at Bristol Rovers.

As a substitute, the Londoner also scored against Gillingham, Macclesfield and Luton - all three of those at Deepdale.

His two goals in games he started came against non-league minnows Ford United in the FA Cup and a last-minute winner in the league at Notts County.

He had a good turn of pace which allowed him to play wide at times as well as up front.

Harris was sold to Hull City for £40,000 in July 1999, with his career later taking him to Shrewsbury, Southend, Harrogate and Nuneaton.
