The result leaves Garstang second in the North Hockey Women’s League Division Two North West table and just four points off the top spot.

The Reds had to battle through the wet and windy weather conditions to condemn Wigan to their ninth loss of the season.

Fran Summers opened the scoring after pouncing on a perfectly timed pass from Rebecca Worthington.

With Garstang’s continuous high press it was only a matter of time before the Reds added a second.

Christy Martin slipped the ball down the line for Worthington, who crossed the ball into midfielder Josie Rice and she swept it home.

Garstang continued to press the opposition and won several penalty corners. Following one well-worked routine, Di Roe squeezed the ball past the Wigan keeper to score the third goal.

Garstang’s fourth came from Roe, who charged into the D and pulled off a reverse-hit for Worthington to deflect into the goal.

Garstang took the opportunity to try out some new tactical manoeuvres, from which resulted in a quick break from Lyndsey Hayes, who passed to Summers.

She shot at goal, only to be denied by the Wigan keeper.

Summers made no mistake with her next attempt when Alice Matthews crossed in a well-placed ball and she fired home.

Some good plays down the wing from Jen Moss to Matthews produced some accurate crosses, keeping the forwards on their toes.

The Reds saved the best goal until last, when the ball was played out down the left-hand side of the pitch for Matthews to cross the ball into the D, and it was smashed into the far corner of the goal by Worthington.
