Great Britain and Ireland closer to glory

Great Britain and Ireland’s golfers edged a step closer to regaining the Walker Cup on Sunday as England’s Ashley Chesters and Jimmy Mullen again led from the front at Royal Lytham and St Annes, setting the tone for the rest of the morning.

The home side won the Sunday morning foursomes 3-1 to extend their advanatge going into the concluding 10 singles in the afternoon.

After winning the opening foursomes 3-1 and splitting the eight afternoon singles at 4-4, home captain Nigel Edwards sent the same four pairs out in the same order on day two.

And Chesters and Mullen duly recorded their second successive 3&2 victory, beating Beau Hossler and Denny McCarthy thanks to four birdies in the last eight holes.

That increased GB&I’s lead to 8-5.

American duo Bryson DeChambeau and Robby Shelton beat Gavin Moynihan and Jack Hume 3&2, but that was to be their only point of the morning.

The Irish pair of Paul Dunne and Gary Hurley beat Mike McCoy and Scott Harvey by one-hole.

Then Cormac Sharvin and Jack McDonald beat Hunter Stewart and Lee McCoy by two-holes to make the overall match score 10-6 to GB and I.
