Yeovil Town 2-4 Morecambe

Morecambe produced a fine second-half comeback to overturn a two-goal deficit and sink 10-man Yeovil on Saturday.

Harry Cornick put the hosts ahead after just a minute but Paul Sturrock’s side then saw Shaun Jeffers sent off for a high challenge on Aaron McGowan.

They still managed to increase their lead through Omar Sowunmi shortly before the half hour but playing with one man less for more than an hour proved too much for The Glovers.

Goals after the break from Aaron Wildig and Andy Fleming levelled things up before Lee Molyneux put The Shrimps in front on 84 minutes and Kevin Ellison completed the win in stoppage time.

Morecambe were behind with just 60 seconds on the clock.

Jack Compton got in behind on the left and fired a ball across the face of goal with Cornick on hand to convert from close range at the back post.

Despite going behind the visitors then enjoyed a spell of decent possession, Tom Barkhuizen’s shot on the turn from 20 yards saved low to his right by Artur Krysiak.

Shaun Miller then sliced a shot wide of the near post shortly after the quarter hour as The Glovers made little attempt to press home their advantage.

The hosts’ lead looked even more precarious when Jeffers was shown a harsh straight red card for a high studs up challenge on McGowan on 27 minutes.

But it was The Glovers who got the game’s next goal, doubling their advantage two minutes later.

Captain Nathan Smith overlapped down the left and hung up a high cross with Sowunmi getting the better of Adam Dugdale to head beyond Roche.

The game was becoming increasingly fractious with referee Nicholas Kinseley losing control having earlier failed to punish Laurence Wilson for kicking out at Cornick.

Both Jamie Devitt and McGowan were shown yellow cards for late challenges as The Shrimps failed to make their man advantage count at the end of an eventful opening period.

Ryan Edwards was nearly made to pay for gifting the ball to Iffy Allen on the stroke of half-time but the substitute saw his shot beaten away by Roche.

The Shrimps were revitalised after the break, substitute Molyneux whipping a shot narrowly over from 20 yards as the visitors looked for a way back into the game.

Yeovil were content to sit on their lead with Morecambe dominating possession, Molyneux testing Krysiak with a 25-yard shot on the hour mark.

Fleming was the next to go close, poking wide at the far post after Paul Mullin’s cross had evaded Shaun Miller.

The Yeovil rearguard was breached on 63 minutes with Wildig converting Mullin’s chipped cross with a fine, acrobatic finish.

It didn’t take long for Morecambe to level things up with their second coming 20 minutes from time.

The visitors counter attacked at pace with Wilson, having raced half the length of the field, squaring for Fleming to score on the stretch at the far post.

The Shrimps nearly squandered their fine work on 74 minutes but after Cornick had robbed Roche of possession on the edge of the area, Ryan Edwards was on hand to head clear.

It was Morecambe who continued to dominate though, Fleming failing to make proper contact when in on goal after being found by Wildig’s chip over the top.

The Shrimps were increasingly taking chances and leaving the back door open, Ryan Bird heading wide for the hosts on 78 minutes when he perhaps should have done better.

The comeback was complete six minutes from time however, Molyneux completing another fine counter by drilling a low shot past Krysiak from 15 yards.

Morecambe nearly extended their advantage on 88 minutes but Kevin Ellison saw a header come back off the post.

Ellison wasn’t to be denied though heading home Molyneux’s deflected shot in stoppage time to complete a memorable comeback.
