Fleetwood Town's goal-hungry Dutch signing Ricardo Kip is expected to have his first taste of English football against Premier League Liverpool at Highbury tonight (7pm).

Town beat off several clubs on the continent to snap up free agent Kip after his contract at Dutch second-tier club Almere City ran out this summer.

The 24-year-old Ajax youth academy graduate joined Almere in 2013 and scored 17 goals from the middle of the park as City narrowly missed out on promotion to the Dutch top flight with defeat to Willem II in the play-offs.

Town boss Steven Pressley has been impressed by his latest signing’s eye for goal. And with last term’s midfield trio of Jimmy Ryan, Eggert Jonsson and Antoni Sarcevic (now at Shrewsbury Town) scoring only three goals each all season, he hopes Kip can add more firepower in that department.

Pressley said: “I have seen Ricardo play numerous times on DVDs. I met him roughly 10 days ago, and I was impressed with his attitude and felt he would fit in well with the squad.

“The scouting team recommended the player to me. Ricardo’s history last season was very good and we are hopeful he can adapt to English football.

“We believe he possesses the right attributes to adapt. We are confident he also has the right attributes to fit in with our style of play, which is very important as we play a high-energy style of football.

“He ticks all the right boxes. Last season he had a very good goalscoring record and we wanted to bring in additional goals and a threat. He is very versatile and can play anywhere in midfield.”
