Preston manager Alex Neil gives instructions out from the sideline despite being sent off at half time during the Sky Bet Championship match between Middlesbrough and Preston North End at Riverside Stadium on March 16, 2021.

'Supercomputer' predicts where Preston North End, Barnsley, Birmingham City, Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday will finish in the Championship

After losing four games from five - a run which ultimately cost Alex Neil his job at Deepdale - a sophisticated ‘supercomputer’ has predicted where Preston and their Championship rivals are likely to finish in the table.

FiveThirtyEight’s data model uses statistics to map out the season, and they are predicting another close race for Championship survival and promotion to the Premier League.

The Lilywhites are unlikely to be involved at either end of the table having collected a solitary point from that five-game sequence during March.

That, and a run of just three wins from 16 games since the turn of the year, has left Preston with very little to play for.

And as a result the club is heading towards its worst finish in the division since 2010/11 when suffering relegation to League One under Phil Brown.

North End were five points away from the play-off places just before the halfway stage of the season, but now find themselves closer to the bottom three than they are to the top six.
